Chapter Sixteen

The line to get into the Caf and Nosh went out the door, winding through the sidewalks of Hollowville.

“So what’s this thing?” Isaac asked. He, Oliver, Jamie, Max, Tom, and Liam had joined Sarah and her best friend for some kind of dinner.

“It’s kinda a town thing.”

“A town thing?”

She nodded. “The Caf and Nosh does a preview of its Hanukkah menu as a way to raise money for charity. It’s called the Cavalcade of Latkes, and this year it’s tonight.”

He blinked. It was the most amazing thing he’d ever heard. “Cavalcade?”

She laughed. “Yeah. The Caf and Nosh Hanukkah Cavalcade of Latkes. Latkes made from a ton of different vegetables and in a ton of different ways. Applesauce, of course, and that other stuff.”

“Glad to know you’re an applesauce lover.”

“Of course I am. Because it’s the best.”

He nodded. “Absolutely.” Usually being around long lines bothered him; on them was even worse. But here, and right now, he was filled with anticipation. “How long has this been going on?” he asked.

“A few years. Three maybe?” She paused. “I kinda see this as the real beginning of the holiday season, you know? Some people think of a parade and a red suit; I think of sizzling latkes and an entire town ready to eat them.”

“I love that image,” he said. “I can see it, and it’s so great.”

“What’s great, Mr. Lieberman?”

He turned to see Chana standing in front of them. “That the entire town seems to be here tonight,” he said. “That my friends and I are going to get the chance to have a wonderful dinner.”

“That’s all well and good.” The older woman turned to Sarah. “I understand the whole be a good citizen thing, but, Sarah Goldman, you’re vice chair of the festival! What are you doing in this line?”

Sarah bit her lip, and he wanted to shield her under his coat, protecting her from what she wanted to hide from. “Waiting? Like everybody else?”

Chana shook her head. “Fakakta,” she said. “Absolute stupidity. Thankfully, I came out here looking for a big table and our Hanukkah fairy should not have to wait on this line. Especially when your parents, Sarah, and Anna’s, wherever she is, and Elsa are already inside.”

He turned around, to his friends and Anna, all of whom were attempting to put their hands in their pockets, trying to cover up whatever shenanigans they were involving themselves in.

“It’s cold out here!” Tom said, laughing. “Come on. Bring us to food!”

“Also,” added Anna, “you can’t forget the most important rule.”

“Which is?” he asked.

“Never naysay a restaurant owner when she wants to make her own rules.”

They both laughed, before Sarah gave an imperceptible nod, which was Chana’s cue to lead them all up the hill to the restaurant. And dinner. And whatever else was going to happen in the Caf and Nosh, that night.

*

And because she was smart, Sarah leaned into Isaac as Chana led the group up the hill to the restaurant. It was decorated with blue lights, some patterned to look like stars of David, some dreidels and gelt.
